Doers of the Word

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

James 1:22
‭‭

This verse is one that we have heard many times, but if we are honest, we do not put it into practice as often as we should. As events on the calendar stack up and our weeks get full, we make excuses for not getting in the Word, much less applying it to how we live our lives.

See, satan doesn’t need to get you to worship him, he just needs you to not worship God. It is my fear that in a world predicated on the fulfillment of our own personal wants and desires, we have began to attribute worship to ourselves rather than our Creator. We have let ourselves believe that being in the Word every day is an above and beyond thing to do for a Christian. In reality, that is what is expected of Christians, to be in daily fellowship with God.

Another lie that we have believed is that going to church on Sunday is “enough”. Attending a message every Sunday does not amount to much if it doesn’t result in a changed heart and increased desire to live out your calling as a Christian man or woman. Church is designed to fill up our cups spiritually and strengthen us to go out into the world for another week. It is not meant to be the only time we consume spiritual nourishment. If we want to be doers of the Word, we must first become hearers and establish spiritual disciplines that increase our time in His Word.

When we make a habit of devoting time to God, in His Word, we learn what type of life He is calling us too. We may face busy schedules, countless distractions, broken workplaces, cultural opposition, and much more, but through it all we are called to be an ambassador for Christ. We are called to put Him at the forefront of everything we do and everything that we are.

We live in the midst of a broken society that is in dire need of truth, but, unfortunately, is searching in all the wrong places. We have an obligation to reach this culture. We have an obligation to fulfill the Great Commission and to spread the good news to the lost, broken, and hurting. To become doers we must reject the cultural lies that plague cultural Christianity and we must develop an adoration and love for the Word of God. When we spend more time in the Word our faith in the Lord is strengthened, we learn more about His goodness, and we are compelled to put His truth into action. God Bless.
