On this special day dedicated to love, I have a special episode of RANKED featuring my favorite love songs. For this list, I won’t be picking from your typical tropes that usually top lists like this. For that reason, you won’t find things like “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston or “Endless Love” by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross.

I’m going to attempt to compile songs from my favorite artists or at least artists that I regularly listen to. I’m trying to make some untraditional and rather recent choices. With that in mind, let’s get started.

Honorable Mentions: Smithereens — Twenty One Pilots, Butterflies — Kacey Musgraves, Thinkin’ Bout You — Frank Ocean

5. Some Kind of Love — The Killers

This track from the latest Killers album Wonderful Wonderful is a tender, quiet letter written from Brandon Flowers to his wife. In 2013, his wife, Tana, revealed that she struggled with depression and anxiety. In this airy song filled with plenty of tearjerking moments, the most beautiful is the Flowers children singing “Can’t do this alone / We need you at home / There’s so much to see / We know that you’re strong.” “Some Kind of Love” is more than a traditional “I love you” from husband to wife, it portrays the love that surrounds a family when they’re close together.

4. Video Games — Lana Del Rey

I have loved this song since I first heard it in the fall of my first year in college. In “Video Games”, Lana Del Rey discusses the need for a simple relationship with words like “I tell you all the time / Heaven is a place on Earth with you.” It’s more of a somber tone but once you delve into the lyrics, you’ll learn the true meaning.

3. Still Into You — Paramore

This absolute bop from Paramore’s fourth self-titled fourth studio album is still a staple of their live shows. Despite lead singer stated that she should be over all the butterflies, it’s a happy song exploring timeless love that proves that “even after all this time, I’m still into you.”

2. Dear To Me — Electric Guest

In an interview with The Fader, Electric Guest’s lead singer Asa Taccone called “Dear To Me” a song that came from the heart. On this 2017 track, Taccone muses about bad times being overcome by remembering that there’s someone to love and that’s all that should matter. The silk vocals mixed with the upbeat rhythm and pitch perfect backing vocals create a atmosphere that will you smiling no matter what mood you started the song in.

1. Mystery of Love — Sufjan Stevens

This beautiful tune set to acoustic guitar earned Sufjan Stevens his first Academy Award and Grammy nominations, rightfully so. The track is the focal point of the soundtrack from 2017’s Call Me By Your Name and portrays an unconditional love story. It’s about the absolute freedom that comes with love and remains one of favorite songs in recent memory.
