RANKED: The Next Batman

By Zach Hester

From the time that it was announced that Matt Reeves would be directing a new standalone Batman film, the big question has been whether or not the new DCEU Dark Knight, Ben Affleck, would don the cape in a feature film. This week, Affleck confirmed that he wouldn’t be returning as Bruce Wayne in the new film that’s set for 2021, which set social media ablaze with one question: who will be the next Batman?

While the DCEU hasn’t exactly been my favorite of the ever-growing number of cinematic universes, the success of 2017’s Wonder Woman and last year’s Aquaman show that there is a glimmer of hope for a new solo Batman movie. My five inspired choices have a little bit of something for everyone and have the potential for a wide array of very different takes on the next Dark Knight.

5. Boyd Holbrook

Premiere Of Netflix's "Narcos" Season 2 - Arrivals

While 2018’s The Predator might not have been the greatest film of all time or anything…it did prove that Boyd Holbrook has the capability of being a leading man. This 37-year-old model turned actor could keep the edgier angle that Affleck and Christian Bale brought to Batman. His role in Logan has also proved that he has an intimidation factor that could help make his Batman a strong, rigid character.

4. Oscar Isaac

Oscar Isaac

Oscar Isaac seems to the charismatic man on everyone’s list for Batman. He’s proven that he can handle a comic role and his acting chops seems second to none. Thanks to his witty Poe Dameron in the new Star Wars films, he’s amassed a devoted fan base that might love to see his take on The Dark Knight.

3. Armie Hammer

Armie Hammer

Armie Hammer has a long history of being attached to major roles like James Bond and even Bruce Wayne himself in the long lost George Miller Justice League movie. One of my favorite actors, Hammer has proven time and time again that he has the potential and talent for greatness. He sits on the cusp of striking the Hollywood A-List after top notch performances in The Social Network and Call Me By Your Name, so a suave, debonair take on Bruce Wayne might be just what needs to hit the big time.

2. Daniel Kaluuya

Daniel Kaluuya is easily one of the best actors of his generation. While many believe that he would be better suited for a Batman villain, I think a younger Batman would be very interested after seeing the possibility in the years of development on FOX’s Gotham. As the first person of color to portray Batman on the big screen, Kaluuya would bring a new perspective to this familiar role that would make for a more interesting backstory.

1. Jake Gyllenhaal

Gyllenhaal isn’t just the natural choice based on the darker material he’s stepped into, but he seems like the next-in-line to take on this huge role. Another one of my favorite actors (possibly my very favorite), Jake Gyllenhaal credibility as a chameleon seems like a natural fit for Batman. While Gyllenhaal has said he isn’t on Matt Reeves’ shortlist, it feels like a bad move to not admit that he isn’t the best fit for the role.

While Ben Affleck was not my favorite Batman, he did bring a darker, aged aspect to the role. I’m confident that any one of my choices would bring that same edge to the role. Who do you think should be the next Batman? (I own no photos)
