RANKED: Five Must-See Movies in 2019

In 2018, I was fortunate enough to see 40 new movies either in theaters or via streaming services and Redbox. In 2019, I hope to see at least that many…or more.

Just like last year at this time, there are plenty of films to look forward to in the first half of this year. So today I am sharing the five movies I’m most looking forward to in 2019 from now until the end of June. March is shaping up to particularly formidable this year, just like last year.

Here are my personal picks for this week’s Ranked, share your own choices in the comments!

Honorable Mentions: The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, The Translation of Wounds, Hellboy, Avengers: Endgame, Godzilla: King of the Monsters

5. Pokemon: Detective Pikachu — May 10

Okay…hear me out. There are very few things I love more than Pokemon. While the original trailer sparked a little bit of weirdness seeing the iconic Pikachu voiced by Ryan Reynolds, I couldn’t imagine anything more than the hilarity that is bound to ensue in this movie. I’ve wanted live action Pokemon for so long and this seems right up my alley.

4. Where’d You Go, Bernadette — March 22

Cate Blanchett’s latest outing suggests that it might be her most charming role since Carol Aird in 2015’s Carol. This adaptation of Maria Semple’s 2012 novel is director Richard Linklater’s latest film and with a star-studded cast, there’s hope that this could be a new juggernaut for all involved.

3. Captain Marvel — March 8

The debut of Carol Danvers is something we’ve waited for since the end credits scene of last year’s Avengers: Infinity War. While she’s set to play a critical role in the sequel to that movie, I feel far more excited to see her origin story as a Kree warrior fighting across the galaxy. Brie Larson is the perfect choice for this role and I can’t wait to see her lead against the army of Skrulls in early March.

2. Dumbo — March 29

I physically cannot stop myself from crying while watching the original animated Dumbo. The latest live action remake from Disney promises to evoke that same emotion. The trailer looks so beautiful and provides such cinematic pleasure in its very short peek into the film. The character poster of Dumbo  that was released this week is also too adorable to even fathom so there’s that.

1. Us — March 22

From the moment that the trailer for Jordan Peele’s second feature film debuted on Christmas Day, I knew it had the early potential to be my favorite movie of 2019’s first half…maybe even the whole year. Us looks just as impressive as 2017’s Get Out and presents a very fearful atmosphere for both Lupita Nyong’o and Winstone Duke. It seems that Jordan Peele’s goal is to make us think and keep us on the edge of our seats at the same time.
