This Month in Music: May ’18

The month of May brought us some of the best songs and albums of the year so far. From fresh indie beats to powerful rock songs and a recurring brand of electronic pop arriving on the radio.

HalfNoise returned with their Flowerss EP. This band, headed by Paramore drummer Zac Farro, has risen among the ranks of my favorite artists with gorgeous sounds and great lyrics. I’ll go as far as saying that She Said could easily end up as my favorite song by the end of this year.

Vesperteen also came back into the fold with a new extended play called The Hype Is Dead. I had the opportunity to see this group live earlier this year and it was one of the coolest and most intimate shows that I’ve ever seen. The Hype Is Dead is a great entry to this band’s discography and the best part of it, just like all of Vesperteen’s music, is lead singer Colin Rigsby’s outstanding vocals.

Indie heavyweights Florence + The Machine and Sufjan Stevens came back with new songs called Hunger and a cover of Moses Sumney’s Make Out In My Car, respectively. I’m 110% late to the party on Sufjan Stevens after only discovering him at the end of 2017 through his contributions to the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack, but he now stands as my favorite solo artist right now. His cover of Sumney’s track is unique in that he changed lyrics and really added new layers of originality to the work.

shawn-mendes-shawn-mendes-islandRising pop stars Charlie Puth and Shawn Mendes also came back strong with their own full length albums this month. Both have huge hits and a few misses on their records, but are definitely an enjoyable time. I’m really excited to see these male radio pop stars taking on more of an electronic vibe with Timberlake influences. I’m really excited to see where both artists go from here.

May was just a great month for music. It brought some of my favorite people back into the fold and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the year tops what has come so far. Check out this blog at the end of June for a full blog of my favorite songs and movies of 2018 so far!
